More American Crane custom designs…

Pictured below is a CMAA Class “E” Mill Duty Crane. A Mill Duty Crane is specifically manufactured to meet the service classification covered by AISE Standard 6 – “Specification for Electric Overhead Traveling Crane for Steel Mill Service”. The crane pictured above was designed with an anti-swaying reeving arrangement (includes more ropes than a standard design) which reduces load swing ensuring precise alignment.

Nondestructive Testing Services

American Crane and Equipment offers magnetic particle testing, liquid penetrant testing, and weld inspection services for base materials, components (e.g., hooks) and welds. Magnetic particle testing can be performed to ASTM E709 as well as ASTM A275 standards and liquid penetrant testing can be performed to ASTM E165 standards or other customer specified requirements. Testing is performed by SNT-TC-1A qualified personnel with extensive experience and these services are routinely performed at our customers’ facilities.

Our weld inspection qualifications include inspections performed by qualified weld inspectors with in depth knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.6, and AWS D14.1 welding codes. Complete weld inspection reports and weld engineering services are also available.

All of these services are available under American Crane’s 10CFR50, Appendix B and ASME NQA-1 nuclear quality program which allow us to perform NDE inspections for commercial nuclear and DOE (Department of Energy) contracts.

This week’s crane term: Hoisting Drum

Pictured below are three drums which are mounted to a custom manufactured trolley frame and are vital to the movement of the lifted load on this custom built hoist. A hoisting drum is a cylindrical member which holds a wire rope for the purpose of lifting and lowering a load.

Minimize Your Seismic Risk During The Dry Spent Fuel Transfer Process

The SAFLIFT cask/canister system is designed to safely transport loaded transfer casks and canisters with the SAFLIFT strongback lower block from the spent fuel pool area to the canister transfer area. Once the tranfer cask and canister have been placed on top of the concrete cask, the SAFLIFT system provides seismic stability to the stacked casks by supporting the load with the SAFLIFT strongback/lower block. This eliminates the problems and costs associated with building based tie-down of stacked casks. The SAFLIFT has the unique capability to remotely lower the canister (using the canister hoist and grab) from the transfer cask to the concrete cask while the strongback/lower block provides seismic stability. All these tasks are completed using our ULTRASAF single failure-proof lifting system consistent with the requirements contained in NUREG 0554 and 0612.

SAFLIFT technology is a culmination of American Crane’s experience as the market leader in nuclear fuel handling. SAFLIFT was engineered to overcome the many problems encountered with outdoor vertical canister/cask transfer facilities. The flaws of the outdoor vertical transfer facilities show that a material handling expert, not cask experts, should design these type of systems. American Crane’s revolutionary, patented design of SAFLIFT is testament to its commitment for providing safe and cost effective material handling solutions.

Pictured below is a Helical Gear Motor. A Helical Gear Motor has the teeth cut at an angle to the center line of the gear. This kind of gear is useful because there is no chance of intermittent tooth-to-tooth operation since there are at least two teeth engaged at any time. Also helical gears tend to operate quieter than straight cut gears. Among other places, this type of motor is used in Trolley and Bridge Drives.
